Mike RayGriffin and Howe scope mount problem
Have pre-64 70 that I had rebarreled to 6.5 swede has G&H side mount I would like to retain but have clearance problems, with bell touching barrel also bolt hitting eyepiece. .Looks like shimming between ring and base would work but I think the screws would be too short . I've not blued it yet so I guess I could turn a little off the barrel and shave the bolt handle, but that just doesn't seem right. Higher rings would solve the problem if I could find and afford them or I could just use regular base and rings and leave side mount base in place, or remove base and fill holes, are there only two mounting scews? can't see headsas they have been polished out smooth and level with base. Whats a fella to do.

richjWhat's your goal?
Save money?
Restoration?
Just make it a shooter?
There are up to 5 holes in the side rail holding the mount on. I would NOT alter the rifle other than to remove the side mount and fill the holes. Look inside the rail.
I think the easiest thing to do is call G&H and see if they make/made higher rings.

Mike RayI am building it to shoot, the ring in you picture are definitely higher, only problem with removing the base is i've just inletted it into a nice piece of california english. I just looked at it again and you can tell where the screwheads are , at half time i'll try a 2x7 leupold might get lucky. , thanks for the reply may leave base and add standard mounts and sell the thing.

airgun1I was going to suggest shopping for a different scope. I am a huge Leupold 2-7 fan.

eddiel4You don't mention which scope makes contact however before you look to mount the scope higher maybe another scope would work. Leupold makes a compact 2X7 and 3x9 that are smaller at the rear eyepiece and may solve your problem. If these aren't your cup of tea, another solution would be to buy a set of 7/8" G&H rings off ebay as they come up reasonably often and aren't all that expensive. Then you could use a Lyman (or Leupold) Alaskan which look great and I would bet you'd have ample clearance to the bolt handle while having a "period" looking rifle. The one thing I have against the high G&H rings is they look unbalanced. Also, if your pre-64 is a low comb stock then higher rings just make stock fit problems worse. Good luck...
