Pre-64 Fwt.

Pre-64 Fwt.

Have a Win. Fwt. in .30-06 that I have been contemplating rechambering to .338-06. Just today I found out it is a pre-64 and am wondering if I should leave it as is, as I am aware that pre-64 rifles are sought after. What do you folks think?

My feeling on it, and keep in mind that this is coming from a guy who just tore apart a real nice pre-war M70 to build a target rifle, is that you should do whatever will give you the most pleasure out of the rifle. the truth is that pre-64 featherweights in 30/06 are not super collectable anyway and the action can form the basis for a rifle you will really enjoy using and owning. I figure the destiny of pre-64 rifles is not necessarily to make some collector happy but to be used in whatever way satisfies the owner as long as this doen't include putting it in a thumbhole stock with white diamond inlays. Bill, devil gonna git you for that. you should go brush your teeth and use mouth wash, then say ten hail marys and beg for forgiveness. Just kidding, I just couldn't bring myself to do something like that. Traded a 1959, 264 mag for a sendero a while back and wish I had kept it. Every time I see that question I kick my self right in my clinton...

It bothers me not in the least to rebarrel a pre 64 Mod 70 or customize one in any manor..It makes the rest of them more valuble...I do it all the time..

I buy a lot of the bottom end condition M-70's and use the actions for custom rifles.

The last wildcat that I had made up used a pre-64 rifle. The .264 Win bbl is up in the floor joists in the basement. Meanwhile I am shooting the wildcat. I had the new Douglas bbl turned to fit the M-70 Stock.

That's a nice rifle now. It's a special action.

I rechambered mine to .300 Win.

Shoots very nicely and it let me keep the factory barrel.

Don, you wouldn't happen to have a pre-64 low comb stock "up in the rafters in the basement" that you don't need, do you? Grant.
