I have an old Beech stock that I would like to refinish. The old stain and oil has penetrated some spots deeper than others, so that any finish is spotted. Is there any way to get that old finish out? Thanks, Chuck

Try one of the chemical strippers...or if you want to try a quick and simple method just use some of your wifes Easy-Off oven cleaner. Just don’t “scub†real hard, and use a soft brush or a rag when you rinse it off. I’ve done a bunch of old military stocks with Easy-Off and it pretty much gets down in there and gets all the oils out.

Beech stocks are hard to stain, If it has stain in it id not try and get it out.

I think its the alchohol base stain that you want to use on beech. Most stains wont even penitrate beech.

After you strip it you may want to try an adiline dye instead of stain. They can permeate the wood more evenly. Better woodworking stores have them. (not Home Depot) I have used it with many wood projects, including redoing an old stock, with good results.
