matt salmM1999 action question
Curious if anyone has reworked the extractor on these so it would snap over a case rim loaded into the chamber rather than through the magazine. What do you rework, or can I just buy a replacement extractor that will take care of that? This is on a 300WSM I built a few years ago.

The above photo shows the MRC extractor and the width of the land it has with the red arrow.
This width is far greater than any of my Mausers and a lot wider then my M-70 extractors. The Mausers are nearly knife edge and the M-70 is about 1/10 th that wide.
Reducing this width by increasing the land shown by the black arrow should allow for the condition you asked about.
My 1999 will not snap over the case either and I haven't modified it to do so .....so take this post as untested.....but I think it makes sense.

Glen71I'm curious to know if anyone with a MRC1999 action has tried pressing in on the side of the extractor to cause the hook to pass over a chambered round, like Mr. Mauser's action was designed to do. I don't have one, so I can't try it.

MKane160Glen, I just checked my M1999. The extractor will not slip over as the Mauser will because the back half of the extractor fits much closer to the bolt than on a Mauser. So, there is no room to push the back half of the extractor toward the bolt, levering the claw away from the bolt and over the rim. I've "solved" this by chambering a round from the magazine, turning the rifle upside down, open the floorplate, and filling the magazine from the bottom, stacking rounds as they normally sit in the magazine. Close the floorplate and I'm ready to go---3 down and 1 in the tube. I was concerned that the rounds in the mag would not feed right, but they do....so long as you stack them in the correct left-right-left order (or vice versa)....
