Dr. LouOpening barrel channel of Sako McMillan stock
I am looking at opening the barrel channel of a Sako Fiberclass stock from the OEM 375 H&H contour to a Sako factory 416 Rem. contour? Is it safe to do so, or is there a risk of compromising the integrity of the stock? Should I use a wood Hunter stock instead? Lou

Jim KobeIf you say it is a McMillan, no problem. Use the Gunline BBT tool (barrel bedding Tool). Go slow so you don't take out too much.

tiggertateI had to cut pretty deep into the forearm on mine to bed a #5.5 contour Shilen. Exact same stock. I felt no difference in stiffness afterward but to be sure, I wrapped the barrel with some tape and full-length bedded the channel to cover the foam with epoxy before painting. That left my barrel free-floated once the tape was removed.
