budicealewhich 98 action to use
i'm in the middle of building a 6.5-06 on a 98 mauser. actually, i'm a little past the middle. i have all the parts but the assembly stage has been put on hold for awhile.
while i'm waiting to complete this rifle, i've been trying to decide which of the 3 98 actions i have, to use. i was hoping you guys could help.
i have a 98/22, a vz24 with 1937 on the front ring and a Pxxxxx serial number(japanese navy???), and another vz24 with no date and a CRxxxxx serial number(romanian???)
as far as their condition is concerned...
the 1937 dated one is the best. very minimal pitting below wood line.
98/22 is next more pitting but still not bad at all
the romanian(??)...worst of the bunch. significant pitting
all else being equal i will use the purtyest one. which would you use? are there any metal quality or heat treat issues with any of these?
thanks in advance for any input...bud

45ottoIf my memory is good it seems to me the 1937 vz24s were made for the chinese.

Tex21You can't go wrong with either the 1937 VZ or the 98/22. VZ's are quite popular right now with the hobbiest crowd and I think you'll like what you end up with. 98/22's, provided they're not all pitted to hell, are fine actions too. Both are metalurgically sound and generally suffered few QC issues. Both are also essentially the same action built at the same factory with the same equipment.
I own several of both and like 'em just fine. You could go wrong either way.

budicealetex...thanks. i'm sort of leaning towards the 98/22 at this point. i already have a 6.5x57 built on a 98/22 and really like it. i'm just trying to get some input on which action is best. the condition difference between the 98/22 and the 1937 vz24 is really very small and i'm thinking that condition is about the only difference. the main trouble is that damn 12 point buck i killed this year(really a main frame 9 point with some "stickers") what little $$$ i had for this gun project is going towards getting the deer mounted. merry christmas to me!!
anyway thanks for the reply...bud

stdonThough not finished with the make pretty things, my 6.5/06 is based on a VZ-24 action and I am very pleased with the results.
