LA7mmWinchester M70 take off barrel on MRC1999 action
Can I do this or would the threads need to be recut? Thanks!

Savage99My smith did that for a M70 barrel that I wanted to try. It cost some $$ as the MRC front ring is longer so more threads need to be cut. I should have used a new barrel.

LA7mmWas the cost of fitting the take off barrel to the action more than just having started with a new barrel from the beginning?
From an accuracy persepctive, I'd think the Winchester barrel would be plenty capable.
Thanks

ramrod340The M70 take off will have a extractor cut (assuming it is a CRF)and cone. The MRC uses an inner ring like a M98 so no groove is needed. I would see it as my taking a M70 barrel and having it fitted to a Ruger which has the same thread as the M70. You have to remove the groove and cone. Then you will need to move the barrel shoulder forward and add a couple of turns of new thread. You will have a gap in your thread because there is a gap between the last thread and shoulder on the M70 barrel. In the end the cost was the same as taking a blank and cutting from scratch. I got the barrel for free was the only reason I did it.
