Bolt Notch
Can anyone post a decent picture of the bolt handle notch cut in the receiver of a Mauser 98. Preferably a former military 98.

I just finnished welding up six new handles and have finnished the receivers except for the notches. It would be nice to have a a good visual reference.

I know enough to cut it so that there is no forward camming effect on the bolt. It just seems that I'm needing to remove a LOT of metal. Kinda scarey if ya know what I mean.

Thanks,

M

Take your safty apart and get a dowel that fits in the lever hole. Put inlet black on it and push it until it hits the bolt. Take the bolt apart and use a dremmel or mill to remove the black. Keep doing this until the safty works.

Pyrotek
I believe z1r is asking about a whole different matter.

Pyrotek is right. When you weld a new bolt handle on you have to "notch" the receiver for the handle to clear.

After I weld on a new bolt handle the first thing I do is clean up the new handle and shape it the way I want. I machine a clearance on the bottom of the handle along the old handle stub so I have a flat about .230 wide from the bolt body to the vertical portion of the new handle. When I am satisfied with the new handle I take the action and hold it in the vise on the bridgeport horizontally with the right side pointing up and the bottom facing out. Using a 7/16" dia. center cutting end mill I cut the notch in the receiver with the front of the notch on a line which is an extension of the rear line of the receiver bridge. The depth of this notch determines the extent of the lug locking rotation of the bolt. You deepen this notch until the original safety will rotate into the full bolt locked safe position. If your notch is not deep enough the safety will not go on and the bolt will not be fully closed. If you are doing this on an unbarreled action, close the bolt and inside the receiver ring put a reference mark on the inner c-ring where the ejector cut of the bolt lug locates when the bolt with the original handle is closed. This is the point the bolt must rotate too with the new handle and notch completed. Hope this helps. I normally teach a new person to do there first bolt handle with the barrel off of the receiver because looking in the front and a couple of judicious marks will make it very plain what you are trying to accomplish. I just measured a completed job and the receiver notch is .235" deep. This will vary with your new bolt handle but will be in this vicinity.
