rebluing a flip up winchester rear sight
Hello everyone, I'm trying to reblue a flip up Winchester sight from a Model 52. What is the best way to clean the old bluing out of the tiny little hash marks for windage & elevation(sp?)to keep them visable after the reblue? Also, I'm thinking of using Mark Lee's #1 to reblue. What's your thoughts, what reblue will leave the hash marks most noticable? Thank for all your help!!!

IF the sight has been emersion (caustic salt) blued, you can coat it with Naval Jelly and it will take the blue off. It might take several coats and be sure to either re-blue it right away or oil it because it will rust quickly. If it has been rust blued, Naval Jelly won't work.

I rebuilt one of these sights several years ago- I hope you were careful keeping all the little parts in order...

Clean the old blue with the finest wire wheel you can find. If the wheel is leaving a matte finish, it's too fast or too coarse- it should just clean the hash marks and leave the steel bright...

Mark Lee #1 is the slow rust formula, correct? If so follow the directions and don't let the rust bloom too long- card early card often and the sight will look as good as new in five iterations or less maybe...

Good Luck!
