I am doing a Banner Mauser in 9.3x62. I have chambered the barrel and installed the barrel band front sight and banded sling swivel. I have never built a quarter rib. The barrel is 23" long. Is there a standard length for quarter rib?

Why not study the photos of Mr. Weibe doing the Quarter Rib on the Searcy Memorial rifle.

In addition, Brownells list the specs for the quarter rib they sell as follows:

SPECS: CM steel, in-the-white. 8" (20cm) long, .500" (12.7mm) wide. Order by bottom contour number to match contour of Shilen (S) or Douglas (D) barrel.

Butch, 1st and foremost, you need to decide how long you want your forearm to be on the stock! then your quarter rib length will be a much easier decision. IMO, about 1"-1 1/2" back from the forend tip would be good for me.

Shane Thompson has been sending pictures of the little mini Mauser project he's doing for me. It'll have a small 1/4 rib on it when finished. Maybe he'll share a little info on the subject when the time comes. It's been awhile with no pics. I may need to make a phone call real soon!

Since I have zero original artistic talent, and I needed a quarter rib photo to shape my 1/4 rib for my double, I found the Scholarship photo on p. 16 of that thread. Go fetch!

Terry gave pretty good advice about it's relationship to the forend. However with a long forend you could get carried away with this. I would say mine usually fall between 6 and seven and a half inches, give or take a little. I don't really have a standard and just go with what looks right to me, taking into account things like forend length, number of folding leaves, scope, what length of nose on the rib that I want etc.

Thanks for the advice, Shane and xs headspace. My fore ends are somewhat shorter as I have a shorter length of pull. I usually hunt with clothes on and I want to be comfortable.
Shane, the stock om my Lott will be a good one to look at. I don't have a quarter rib on it, but the barrel length is the same and the fore end will be approx. the same. I will look at it and think that I won't go any longer than 6 1/2".

Not to be a smart ass, but by definition isn't the "standard length" of a 1/4 rib exactly one quarter of the barrel length?

Nahhh, it was because it only cost a quarter, back in 1889.
