A long story. I wanted a 284 winchester in a BLR. I was told by mant that there is no difference in performance between the 284 and 7mm-08. So, I purchased (lightning model) BLR in 7mm-08. I noticed performance wasn't up to my expectations, so I had a local gunsmith put on a 26" Lejia (Sp?) barrel. Accuracy was worse than the factory 20" barrel. I then took the BLR to another gunsmith and this gunsmith guestioned (by roughness of barrel) if the barrel was really a Lejia barrel. He found that the crown machine work was pushed off to one side. So, he cut 1" off barrel and re-crowned. Also, he re-chambered the BLR into 284 winchester. He said that he re-shot the BLR and that accuracy increased from approx. 6" groups before to +3" now. He said that he didn't know anything more about the BLR and to take it out for a test. 3" - 5 shot groups is the best I can get. I want to try a save the $150 barrel if possible. Do you think that fire-lapping may help. I have a BLR (model 81) in 243 winchester and it will shoot moa groups with after market barrel. As additional note, I am confined to a wheelchair so accuracy is important for longer shots. Any suggestions? thanks for your time.
Ron
As far as the "gunsmithing" you have had "done" I hope some of our resident gunsmiths (on this forum) will comment and have some suggestions to help you.I don't know enough about gunsmithing to comment.
I improved the accuracy of my BLR by tuning the loads and projectiles to the rifle.
There is a guy in our club who shoots a .222
BLR and is in a wheelchair and is/was National lever action champion.

I knew that I was in trouble when the rifle came home with the receipt saying it was a Lilja barrel and the break-in instructions were from Shilen. I cornered the original gunsmith and he swore that the barrel is a Lilja barrel. He said that if I sent it back that Lilja would send it back stating that it would be within thier specs.
I have reloaded combinations of bullets and powders ans as mentioned, the best groups (+3"-5 shot groups)with 160 partitions/RL 19 @53.5 grains, winchester cases and WLR primers. I did get approx. same groups with 162 SP-BT/H414 @ 50.0 grains (same cases and primers).
The question I do have tonight is that if the barrel winds up being what we all think it is(junk), that is it better to get a better quality barrel for best accuracy or is it better to get a standard barrel because of natural shortfalls of the BLR lever action?
Thanks for your time.
Ron
I have seen several BLR that would shoot an inch...pretty regular

O. K. What would be the best "bang for the buck" proven barrel I could purchase for the BLR? (284 winchester with 150-160 grain bullets). barrel length? (max. length not important for shooting). rate of twist?
Thanks
Ron
