Can a rem 700 bdl action handle a #7 contour douglas barrel (about 6 1/2 Lbs) free floated out past where the taper starts without undue stress on the action assuming it is bedded right? I am plnning on just opening up the factory stock and glassing the action and first 3" or so of barrel until I can get the boot together for a Mcmillan. Thanks, just don't want to stress or bend anything.
PS if I have the face of the action squared will the holes for the scope mounts still be true? (I guess it matters how far out of square it was to begin with...)

I have a M-70 identical to that and it's fine.

craigsterI've got an early 40X built on a 722 single shot action in 222 with a barrel real close to what you describe. I bedded the complete action out to about your 3 inches. No problem whatsoever. I fact, it's probably the most accurate rifle I own. I've shot more than a few groups in the two's (and a few better than that) with it.

Rick 0311My 700’s all have #7 contours (24â€) and are free floated the entire length from the recoil lug foward and I have never had a problem. All are also pillar bedded with Devcon, with guard screws torqued to 65in/lbs religiously.

Alberta CanuckI have several 722's, aeveral 700's, and a 40-X with #7 or heavier contour barrels, none of which are bedded in front of the recoil lug. Several have 27" & 29-1/2" barrels (used for cast bullet benchrest competition) that have won many matches. Obviously not too big a problem with them........

Bob GI have a number 8 contour Shilen Match Barrel finished to 26 inches and never a problem. In a HS Precision PST 25 stock. No extra bedding under the barrel. I built the rifle in 22-250. Super accurate. Rem. action fully blueprinted.
Do it right the first time.
