wildcat junkieTwist Rate for FN Mauser in 6mm Remington
I found a dirt cheap take off barrel from a '60-'70 vintage FN Mauser.
The barrel is in "Very Good" condition. It is being sold cheap because the threads are buggered up.
I was thinking about getting this barrel, having it turned/threaded for a SR action & using it on my recently aquired 1910 Mex Mauser action.
Here's the rub.
Back "in the day" the 243 took off while the, IMO, superior 6mm Reminton languished because the slow twist rate chosen by Remington would not sabilize the longer 100gr bullets. The 243 Win had a faster twist rate & therefore it shot 100gr bullets W/greater accuracy.
Does anybody have any info or experience w/the FN Mausers chambered in 6mm Reminton from that era?

I have no clue but excellent catch of a potential problem. I would ask the seller to swab the barrel and see what he gets.

I made that very request but did not receive a "favorable response. I think the fact that they were almost giving the barrel away made pressing the issue a non starter.
Conventional wisdom is that since Remington renamed the "244 Remington" to "6mm Remington" when the rate twist was changed from 1 in 12" to 1 in 9" any barrel marked 6mm Remington most likely has the faster twist rate.
I asked about the barrel marking & it is indeed marked "6mm Remington".
It appears to be a 24" light sporter profile, just what I was looking for to put on my 1910 Mex Mauser action.
Very good bore, throat, etc. Seems Bubba buggered the threads up trying to "screw it into something". I bought it for $54.20 shipped.
I'll have the threads tuned down & thread it for the SR thread size.

fla3006If it is marked 6mm Rem it was made after 1963, is probably 1:10 twist and is probably not a factory FN barrel. FN made a few Deluxe Sporters in 244, production of which stopped in 1963. Not to say it isn't a good barrel.

For $54.20 shipped I will take the gamble.
If it's not a 1 in 10' or preferably 1 in 9" I will just have to try to pass it on.
Once I have it in hand where I can determine the twist, gage the throat & inspect the bore, I'll be able to make a better determination of whether I want to take it further.
Rest assured I won't put anything that doesn't appear to be up to the task on that sexy little Mex Mauser action.
I can't wait till I lay hands on the action as well as the barrel.
