20shadow05Model 70 coned breech/extractor question
Hi All,
I have a model 70 and am wondering why the coned breech and extractor cut? I understand the breech may be for cartridge loading ease so they don't get hung up but do not get the extractor cut. The reason I am wondering is I also have a ruger that has the CRF and does not have either. Can a barrel be fitted to a Model 70, by a gunsmith, that does not have the coned breech/extractor cut and still be safe, reliable, etc?
Thanks for your answers, just curious.
Regards
Mark

WestpacOther than making a nice feed ramp, some claim it was for the same reason Remington uses the bolt nose recess on their barrel, to help seal the breech and contain the gas in the event of a case failure. The extractor cut allows the bolt's nose to be positioned closer to the breech for a better seal.
