What is a damascened bolt and follower?
I see Weatherby advertise them as an upgrade option and was wondering what it is? Is it worth it?

It refers to jeweling. It is said to produce a surface that holds a film of oil a little better than one without but I think it's more window dressing than anything and will, overtime, wear and become ragged looking. But it can look sharp for a while! Big Grin

I had a guy do it for me that posted here. It sure looked great and cost me $50.

I thought it was worth it but everyone has their style.

jewelling does have a purpose - it is supposed to hold more lubricant for a smoother operation- does it? only your jeweler knows bewildered

I dont go along with the fact that it holds more oil, but I still like the way it looks on a bolt and extractor. The shiny silver bolt and extractor without the jewelling looks to factoty to me, and with factory work comes cutting corners and cutting operations out to save a few dollars. Roll Eyes
DISCO...DISCO SUCKED, this was being done way before disco, guess I still have some old school in me, cause I still like it! coffee

Don't know a thing about disco, not sure I want to, but can say that Vapodog did a couple "engine turned" jobs for me on RSM and VZ24 and to me anyway, adds a very nice touch or finished look to the rifles. Also had the followers done and the two areas combined adds a nice custom look to not so custom rifles. Friend of mine routinely does his and then blues them and the "jewelling" is visible and is a very unique appearance.

Muzza, Just kidding although I might have to find my disco sucks teeshirt from the late 70,s. Problem is there is no way in hell it would ever fit at this point in life. Big Grin
I really dont know if jeweling helps or not. I cant imagine it makes that much difference. I have some jeweled and some not. Although it looks nice when first done the more it wears the worse it looks. I have a 375 with a jeweled bolt that is pretty worn. It really looks bad. I will either have to do the jeweling again or polish it out. It looks bad enought to detract from the value of the rifle.

Personally, I like the looks of jewelling using as small a tool as possible. Lots of little bitty, overlapping circles.

Mike Smith - I was in my early twenties in the late seventies , and Michael Jackson was a little negro boy singing about a pet rat... Cool

I doubt I could get into my old flares or the spandex shirt either so absolutely no offence taken.. Smiler

Damascining or engine-turning is cool , I intend to try it one day , have all the gear , just havent got there yet .
