Pacific Tool & Gauge

They say that PT&G used to be excellent but "the wheels fell off" in the last few years.
I chose them because I took the advice of someone who used them when they were good.
I learned the hard way that things have changed at PT&G.

A telephone call yesterday got me a promised shipping date of Aril 10, 2018, stated by a return telephone call today.
3 months wait on a custom-throated but otherwise CIP-spec reamer.
OK so far.
We'll see.

Yeah but just how many long throated 458 Win reamers do you need?

I sincerely hope you get your reamer, it is correct, and on time.
PTG will never get another cent of my money.

I buy Mauser actions, parts, micrometers, tools, calipers, etc. Specifically looking for pre-WWII Mauser tools.
I got the reamer in the mailbox yesterday.
It looks beautiful, "500 Jeffery Match."
A CIP 500 Jeffery with 0.250"-long parallel-sided free-bore.
But, the head space gauges are coming in a separate shipment.
That must be the 4-10-2018 ship date that was communicated to me?
"David Kiff
Pacific Tool & Gauge
675 Antelope Rd
White City, OR 97503-1631"
That is where it shipped from, that "Dave" is still putting his name on the packages.
I hope he gets a better grip on his business.
Some disorganization has crept into his organization over the years.
Somebody asleep at the wheel?
The rumble strip is sounding.

It was 3 months to get the reamer. Still don't have the head space gauges.
The guy who took my order by telephone in January is "no longer there."
I'll call the "new guy" in a week if I don't have the qauges in hand.

Aren't the HS gauges available elsewhere?

So what? All hope is not lost?
I paid for the head space gauges at the same time I paid for the reamer, ordered at the same time.
There was a disconnect between production schedules on reamer and head space gauges,
hence the disconnect on shipping them.
It sure is nice to get it all together.
Why would I not want it that way, all from the same maker if I needed them?
I have never had any problems with the quality of the hardware from PT&G.

butchlambertSo you are willing to wait, why even post about it. Dave has had front office and delivery problems for quite some time now.
I guess I need to read your post again to see what your complaint was to need to post.

OK, and I'll try to figure out why you needed to post, Captain Obvious.

WoodHunterShezamm. I have a 500 J finish reamer and headspace gauge.
Standard CIP. Bought it from Dave Kiff maybe 15 years ago. Worked fine, cut two chambers.
Bought a 450 Ackley reamer from Dave Kiff last fall. Got it in 10 days. No problems.
Bought a 9.3x62 reamer from Dave Kiff earlier this year. Got it in 7 days. No problems.

I was also shocked to hear of so much dissatisfaction with PT&G.
That is why I am posting here, to report on a current situation.
I am so far getting satisfaction, but it is indeed slower than it used to be.
Admittedly most of my business has been with the other Dave,
and I cannot remember ever having to wait 3 months for a partial delivery from Manson.

Yea same here.
I have a very large collection of pilots for PTG reamers, so I will still continue to buy PTG. If Manson would configure reamers so the PTG pilots would fit, with the same retainer screw, and without a surcharge, I would start buying Manson. I have several Clymers made back in the day when Dave Manson ran the shop. I hate the snap rings for retaining bushings!

I'm glad you got your reamer, but... have you checked that it's made to print?
I sent in a reamer to have throat and neck dimensions changed. They did one, but not the other. Took more time, more calls, more emails, and more shipping to get what I paid "expedited service" for.
"Trust but verify" and all that rot.
That was then, hopefully PTG has turned over a new leaf in 2018. Good luck with your HS gauges.

Brian CanadaI expect that PT&G will be on their best behaviour for a while.

The CIP spec 500 Jeffery headspace gauges arrived in the mailbox yesterday.
Very nice.
I particularly like the color-coded, painted-recessed-rings on them near the bases,
Red for no go.
Green for go.
To Summarize:
The order was paid for on 1/8/2018.
It was a custom throating of a standard CIP 500 Jeffery finish reamer with removable pilot plus headspace gauges.
Reamer arrived 4/7/2018, gauges 2 weeks later. Surely they did not plan to do that, but it happened.
Seems like they could improve their bottom line and customer satisfaction, by saving on double shipping charges, avoid wasting employee time in telephone calls and emails, etc., by making it all come in one shipment. Business 101.
