Howa/Weatherby scope mount bases need shimming?
I have a new Howa 1500 which I shot for the first time yesterday. Even with the scope adjusted as high as it would go, the gun was shooting 30 inches low at 100 yards. Upon inspection it seems that the receiver dimensions mean I need to put about 30 thou of shimming under the rear base. Does anyone have experience of this - are there any other mounts which would fit this gun correctly, as standard rem 700 mounts clearly don't. I would far rather get proper mounts than use shims.

Nick,
I had the same problem on a Remington short action a year or so ago. Tried the shim route and finally wound up getting the Burris Signature rings that have floating bushings inside of the rings that compenstate for variations.
Check out this link http://www.burrisoptics.com/sigrings.html

Good luck,

Check to make sure you have the right mounts.

I got a good deal because a guy had incorrect mounts. He swore the reciever was off kilter and used Burris rings to correct it. New mounts, a little bedding and I have a very good rifle now.

I want to add that the package did state they were supposed to be the right mounts.

That surely doen,t sound right, and you should not have to use shimms at all! Cheack your mounts, and also some scopes don,t have that much adjustment, but shouldn,t need that much. is your scope new? I could understand 3" or 13" but now 30" . van
