Will be attempting my first barrel plumbing job soon, the action is a savage110, my theory is if I make a complete arse of it then it won't be much money down the drain. My question is this,do all savage actions like the 110 require a barrel nut to secure, if not how do you secure the lug?

If you don't put a shoulder on the bbl., then you will have to use the nut.

All of the model 10-110 actions use the barrel nut to position the recoil lug and set the headspace.

Swapping barrels on the Savage is easy. If you have the barrel nut wrench and a barrel vise or action wrench it takes about 15 minutes after the scope is off.

I regularly get requests when rebarreling these to do it without the ugly nut. Which is no problem for those folks who think they are ugly. You just need a good shoulder like Eddie mentioned. The recoil lug has a tab that fits a recess in the face of the receiver that will hold it into position as you tighten things down, either way. Make sure that the chamber mouth is square and not beveled. Slightly break the sharp edge with a piece of emory cloth while spinning it in the lathe. The object is to leave as much case support as possible. Good luck!
