cal30 1906What would it cost to color case hard a few parts?
Im looking for a good estimate on having a bolt action Newton Color case harened.
The parts Id be interested in doing would be the following.
Reciever
Butt plate
Floor plate
Trigger gaurd
Pistol grip cap & screw
and possibly the bolt schroud Im not sure if it could be done because it has a bolt mounted peep on it.
It is a 1916 Newton so its old and I would not want to chance any damage to it whatsoever.
Let me know the pros and cons if any.
I know there is a wood and a bone method, and was curious what the difference between the two would be. (color)?
Thanks in advance.

h2oboyI would contact Joe Seeley and ask him what he thinks. He is about the only one I would trust to case your parts. Joe does post here so you should be able to send him a PM.

BoxheadDoug Turnbull knows a bit about case color hardening I believe. You might give him a shout.

Traditional CC hardening uses a mix of bone and wood charcoal.
Typically, the parts are fully annealed and then polished before being hardened. Turnbull Restorations does beautiful work.

ssdaveYou can't do traditional case color on a bolt action, as the steel is wrong. Case color is done on low carbon, non-hardening steel. Carbon steels used in bolt action receivers will probably harden to be too brittle. There are processes that will color without hardening. This guy does a lot of non-hardening case colors:
