Jeff AlexanderIs a 338-06 still a wildcat?
I'm about 90% decided to build a 35 Whelen, but still think about a .338-06. I just dont want "A-SQUARE" on the end of it. Does that make it still a wildcat? Is there any difference between a .35 Whelen and .338-06 in resale?

GeorgeSJeff,
Technically, the .338-06 is no longer a wildcat, but I wager dies still aren't considered 'common'.
I had a .35 Whelen; I think the .338-06 is a better cartridge.
Many of the folks who buy guns don't know their asses from their elbows, and may be biased against a round that is not widely available. The gun cranks will know better, though.

Whatcha wanna hunt with it? The 338 generally has a better selection of bullets, making it slightly more versatile I suppose. Personally I think the Whelen would be the way to go as the 338 is a little too close to the 30 caliber offerings to make much difference.
Regarding resale I think both depend so much on the buyer they are probably pretty equal.

HunterJimJeff,
I have owned both a .338-'06 and a .35 Whelen. I still have the Whelen. My opinion is the .35 Whelen is a better killer because it pokes bigger holes. There are enough good .358" bullets out there.
I guess you could buy the Weatherby .338-'06 ammo, but it still says A-Square because that is who standardized the caliber with SAAMI!
