<prewar>Prewar M70 sights??
My prewar Win M70 came with 2" cut off(.300H&H) and the rear sight missing. What was the original rear? Marbles,Lyman...? And is it available? What front sight can you recommend with this combo? Also who makes a decent receiver sight for this rifle. Your opinions and experiences would be appreciated.

VarmintGuyPrewar: The correct rear receiver sight to install on your Rifle would be the Lyman 48 WJS I have several of these and you will be able to find one easily but the cost will be $50.00 to $75.00. The correct barrel mounted rear sight is the Winchester 22-G and I have several of these also in my collection of Model 70 accoutrements. You should expect to pay $18.00 to $35.00 for one of these and the correct elevator. Good luck in seeking these out there are lots of them out there. I would suggest the Receiver sight Lyman 48 WJS model as it has a lot of vertical movement allowing you greater lattitude in choice for the front sight. I have no specific suggestions regarding replacement of the sawed off front ramp sight. There are very attractive front sights commercially available that have wrap around bands that attach easily by a smith with silver solder. Good luck and let me know if I can be of more assistance. The wonderful book "The Riflemans Rifle" will show you detailed pictures of all sights in question.

Dago RedVarmint Guy,
the adjustable rear sight that Winchester made, a single leaf on a screw that would move it forward and back for elevation, what model was that? and what guns would it have been on? I have an original one on my .458winmag and was just curious. Only place I know of to get them is th repro by Wisner, supposed to be better than the originals.

VarmintGuyDago Red: That screw adjustable sight was made by Winchester and it was reserved exclusively for the African Model of the 70 line. It was used from 1956 - 1963. It replaced a Lyman #6 sight that was only used for part of 1956 on the Africans. This Lyman #6 that got replaced was a two blade flip up model. The screw adjustable Model you have is called "the Winchester Adjustable Sporting Rear Sight and Base". No model # just the name!
I do not have a fresh feel for the price of the sight on your Rifle as they are rare and they were only used on that African and not on the 375 H&H apparently! So they are rare and I am sure the Wisener folks are probably the only place to get the repo! I had owned a couple of Africans way back when they were only $600.00 to $800.00 and way after I got rid of them then we all found out just how rare the African is and of course the prices have skyrocketed! Good for you!
