Allen Day old post
Allen,

I was digging through some of your old posts and you said you had Robar finish on your 300 Win. with the Hart barrel.

Was that Roguard? Would you update and give some details?

This obviously isn’t Allen, but I have three rifles finished with Roguard on the exteriors and Robars NP3 on the bolts and innards, and it is great stuff.

I would especially recommend the NP3 on the bolt and innards because it impregnates the steel and needs little if any lubrication.

Roguard comes is various colors and sheens but NP3 (last time I checked) only comes in a satin silver that looks like stainless steel.

Rick,

I assume you can mix and match the NP3 and the Roguard finishes. Just try to figure out here if the Roguard is the finish for stainless.

PS. Hows your son doing?

Hey, thanks for asking...he is doing real well and starting to get “short!â€

Robars NP3 is primarly used on parts that have close tolerance requirements because it has no build up and actually impregnates the surface. Roguard is used where a slight amount of build up isn’t all that important. Both finishes work on any type of steel.

My rifles have matt-black Roguard on the receivers and barrels, and the bolt and all the innards have NP3 coating. That includes the extractor, ejector, sear, and cocking piece. All are Remington 700’s.

I also had 10 M1A magazines coated with NP3 and they are slicker than snot on a door knob!

Not yet, but he is starting to play hand ball off the street curbs! Smiler Seriously, he comes home in either late January or early February.

When I was in we used to say that when a guy got down to less than 100 days he was a Two Digit Midget.

Ours was: I’m so short I left last week...you just think you’re seeing me here!

Schromf, the finish on that rifle is NP-3, but only on the action. The scopemounts and sling studs were finished in electroless nickle, simply because NP-3 is too slippery to be used on scopemounts. The barrel is blackened stainless steel.

If you have a receiver finished with NP-3, you'll need the screws holes chased out with a tap after finishing, or else the screws just won't stay tight, which is what we did with my rifle. I also applied gun-grade Loc-Tite to the action screws and scope base screws, and nothing ever moved on that rifle in the dozen years I owned it.

By the way, the stock on that rifle is painted brown, and the recoil pad is black. So it's a funny looking rifle that has driven the purists crazy in hunting camps around the world! Cool

I LOVE NP-3! It's the toughest and best action finish I've ever had on a using rifle.......
