Has anyone tried these cleaning kits?
Seems like a practical thing to bring on trips, as it doesn't take much space:

M1TankerThe Army is currently issuing the Otis kits. I find them to be a nice field cleaning kit. I have a couple of them and one is always in my field pack. I did replace the worthless Brekfree CLP that comes with it with Militec and Hoppes though.

Rick 0311I own and use several of the Otis kits...but I do not like the fact that there are so many little tiny pieces to lose.
I immediately made up a decent handle for the cable thongs made from a ½ piece of round brass stock because I lost the little “god-damn-it thingamabob†pin that Otis provides for a grasping handle.
And despite the instructions and pictures I have found it next to impossible to use the same patch numerous times just by switching slots or pinching a new spot on the patch.
Other than that...I love em!

djpaintlesI love the Otis kits as a secondary cleaning system. For me they won't replace my Dewey or other good rods for serious cleaning but I don't want to carry a Dewey rod into the feild with me.
If you buy one I reccommend the "Tactical" kit as it covers all the different calibers. Buy the Brass brush kit to go along with it. I keep one in the truck and one in my backpack. On the rifles I have one of the butt packs on I keep a flexible rod with the obstruction remover and a couple patches in the pouch in case the rifle gets nosed into the mud or whatever. I had a sling break once and the rifle fell off my shoulder and muzzled straight into mud ending my hunt. With the little Otis kits with me I won't have a hunt end like that again.
Again you can use whatever solvent you prefer if you don't like Break-Free. I don't think I've ever used the orange bore lite. Any dealer should have spares if you happen to loose any little bits (a supply comes with the dealer package), usually they will give them away if you ask nicely. I usually don't even use the pull through rod, I just wrap the cord around my hand when pulling through..........DJ
I also bought the tactical and love it, don't have much more to add than has already been said, these guys covered it well.
