firemanHow$$ to do..
this work. Install a .458 win mag barrel on a .338 win mag action. Add NECG sights and tweak it to feed. I have a NIB .338 that I got fairly cheap,$500. I also have a NIB .375 and .458 Safari on layaway. I'm half way thinking of just using the Safari and having it restocked. The standard is way to straight for me. I have price a basic stock in the style I want. I'm just trying to figure out what is the cheapest way to get there.
The purpose of this rifle in the short run is too simply shoot charging milk jugs, dangerous black circles and other things found on the target range. I want to get familiar withthe round before a trip to Africa..someday...and to have fun. I know I can just go out and buy a CZ but it still needs work. I have a .375 CZ,great rifle but it does need some work.
Any thoughts on this would be appreciated. I know I can call a smith but I hate to bother the guys. They aren't making any money when talking on the phone.
Thanks!

ramrod340Well ballpark guesses:
Barrel installed $200-400 depending on barrel
Nec sights. $200-250 plus installation
Barrel Band?
So even with your good deal action ($500) you are in the $1000+ range easy.
I bet even the factory 458 would need a little tweaking.
For a hunting 458 the CZ is hard to beat for the price. Would leave you plenty of money for any work needed.
If you are going to restock. Why not go used 458. Maybe even a used Whitworth for around $600-650.

firemanA used Whitworth might be the way to go. I don't see too many up for sale. Are there ones to stay away from?

Do the work....make it a great rifle and let the others go...
you didn't say if the .338 is a M-70...if not I'd return it to the market and put the money in the CZ you already have.

fireman.338 is a M70. I think that I'll wind up with a CZ in .458 win mag. Then have the M70 in .375 slicked up and the use it for a general purpose North American rifle.
