I recently purchased a M48 Yugo mauser in 8x57. It is my understanding that the Yugo has a intermediate action size. Would this action take the 318 WR cartridge?

I would say it could be done but you would be better off with another action besides the intermediate length M48. The 318 is almost identical to the 30-06 in length and although it can be done with a M48 there will be issues.
