<seven17>And yet another Mauser question
Is there a small ring mauser (98 type) that can handle a 30-06? I know the G33-40 can but I'm thinking a much lower dollar bracket. Wasn't there a Mexican small ring that originally came in 30-06?

Mauser98Yes, the Mexican Model 54 is a small ring, intermediate length Mauser 98 that was chambered in .30-06.
They main difference between the M54 and other large ring 98's(besides the ring size) it the bolt. It appears to be a cross between a Springfield and Mauser. The cocking piece and firing pin are Springfield while the remainder is Mauser. ie 3rd locking lug, c-ring, extractor, ejector are all 98.
I have one that I am in the process of re-stocking. It's going to be a nice light, compact rifle.

<seven17>Thanks Bear Claw and Mauser98. I think both those ideas would work. Where in the world would you find those things? I don't know if I've ever seen a small ring Radom in person. I'm sure I've run into a few m1954's though.

<manhasset>seven17,
Two of my favorites are the Peruvian Vz32 and the Czech 16/33 (like the 33/40). Both small rings originally chambered for the 8x57 with nice pre-war quality. I've been looking for almost 40 for a SR peruvian, just can't seem to find one.
Good luck,hope this helps.

D HumbargerGun shows are my hunting grounds. You have the added benifit that you can actually see & fondle what your interested in. In other words..(check it out very closely) for any evidence of basement gunsmithing that might have been performed on it.
Off center screw holes & screwed up bolt handle alterations are the most common problllems.

<seven17>Ray,
Email has been sent, Thanks!
Seems like an obvious question. Why not use a large ring receiver in a 98 variation? There are zillions of these available.

<seven17>Genghis,
That's a logical question actually. Two reasons;
I have lots of large ring rifles already and, I already have a special barrel for this project that begs for a light action and stock and will only have enough shank for the small thread. A Turk might work but I always wanted to try a small ring.
