savage rebarrel without the nut?
I have looked into having my savage 22-250 rebarreled to 250. At least one company (er shaw) will do the job for me, but they do not use the barrel nut, instead attaching the barrel in the traditional, non savage, manner. Are there any pros or cons to this change? I'm concerned about the gap if I reuse the exisiting wood stock. Any other companies out there that will do this job for less than $300 (stainless barrel, headspace, test fire)

Penrod72--

Dont worry about a gap....you'll have to take out wood to fit the new barrel.

To barrel without the nut means the butt of the barrel has to be about the same diameter of the nut.

It's harder to set perfect headspace without the nut.

I wouldn't use a Shaw barrel for anything but a jackhandle.......but that's my *opinion*.

JBelk,
I have a 48" Jackall. What taper do you recommend for this application? Regards, Bill.

Jack's right, stay away from Shaw. The Savage factory makes much better quality barrels than Shaw does. I'd send it back to them before I'd put a Shaw on.

unless you are change caliber or just plain ruined the barrel, Savage is known for GREAT barrels.

I fyou accuracy is bad, try changing the trigger first.

Barrels usually come with a shank of 1.200. This will fill the gap left from the barrel nut.

Why don't you just order a prefit barrel from Sharpshooter's Supply or Pacnoor(really good) and rebarrel it yourself? That's the best aspect of having a barrel nut, is headspacing without a lathe.
