Mauser Blind Rear Tang Hole
Other than “enough money†Wink, what is involved in having the rear tang modified on a military Mauser for a blind screw hole? Is it a feasible conversion to do?

I really like the clean lines on the rear tang of something like the Satterlee Arms Mauser action posted a little while back (see 2nd pic from top), but I was wondering if this is worth doing, or even possible, to a standard commercial or military Mauser action.

cheers,

It is possible, and often done, but I can't tell you exactly how it's done.

The work in making a blind rear receiver hole isn't that bad if you have the proper tools. When I do it, first I turn an insert on the lathe that screws into the hole. On the bottom of the insert is a new threaded hole for the rear tang screw. I make the top of the insert that screws into the receiver, just a little short of going all the way thru. Then use a tig welder and weld the insert into place and cover the hole. You will need to perhaps remachine the top of the hole to remove any extra steel left from welding. You will also need to shorten the rear tang screw to match.

Marks method is the slickest one I have ever seen and it is fool proof. I got an action for a stock job from a smith who shall remain nameless who just welded the hole up with a plug. Welded poorly too I might add as the first time the rear tang screw bumped the weld, it raised it's ugly head above the slot. As the stockmaker, I had the honor of getting the thing rewelded at a local shop. I dressed up the groove with an old rusty file and an exacto knife.
