.308 on a budget
Have an old Rem 700 ADL in .308. I like the caliber well enough, but the stock is raggedy with a plastic butt plate (slippery and noisy), the bore is pitted and doesn't seem to want to group any better than 2.5-3". Now that is good enough to kill deer, but not inspire confidence. I like the idea of putting a laminated stock on this and a new factory barrel. Would this be an economical alternative to putting on some respected aftermarket barrel?

Mike,

If you really want to "cheap out" you could probably find a take-off Remington barrel in .308 Win and another take-off ADL stock and just jack up the action and slide the new parts in.

I don't know who is good to deal with, but here are a few quick places you can look for take off barrels online:

Thanks for the replies. I never thought to look online for takeoff barrels. Duh. Appreciate the info. Mike.

Mike,

Man I'd really strongly suggest skipping on the stock and putting a quality barrel on that gun. I'd suspect you could get a quality aftermarket barrel for cheaper than a takeoff anyway and then you will have a good platform deserving of a good stock later on when finances allow.

Aren't Remington barrls fairly good? On my son's Rem 721 30-06 I have gotten groups just over .3" with rem 165 pspcl and RL22. How much more do you want? I'd say get a take off barrel and stock or aftermarket stock and put it all together. There is no need for every gun we own to be a $?000.00 wonder. I picked up a Big% turk 8mm and sporterized it all. I have about $125 into it includeing the scope. I can get .8" groups with speer 170's. It's ugly, but it works.

Looks like the most expensive part would be to get someone to put your new barrel on.

Wow. There are a lot more resources than I thought available. I'll probably bid on some of that stuff. Thanks again.
