Barrel makers
Hello. I am specing out my first custom rifle project. I might go with a new barrel rather than the factory. [Sako].

Tell me what brand you prefer, and why. Stainless of course

Lilja
Shilen

Last night I looked at the LoWat site and all I could find was stuff threaded for the 98 Mauser. I am using a 595 Tikka as a base action. Additionally this will be a 17 caliber rifle, a wildcat, so I need an unchambered, unthreaded barrel. (To send the smith). Do they make something like this?

Around here it's the Hart barrel. Most shooters say they have never seen a bad one.

But I would ask your gunsmith. If he has imput it may go on better.

JoeM,

Give Woody Woodall at L-W a call.

The web site is outdated but they are working on a new one. It doesn't list their .510" 1:10" (possibly 1:12", can't remember)SS barrel either, but I have one from them as of Jan 2002. Talk to Woody and he'll help you out.

Joe,

I have used many barrels from Hart, Lilja, Shilen, and Douglas, and I have never had a single bad one.

I would gladly use any of the above.

I especially like Dan Lilja's larger calibers - 375 and above.

Ditto Woody and Lothar-Walther barrels. For hunting guns, they are great barrels. I have four L-W barrels are all are impressively accurate. For target/varmint barrels, Krieger is impossible to beat.

I prefer Lilja and Douglas in that order. I have had a bad Shilen and they were not pleasant people.

The end of last year I packed my Winchester M70 270 Win off the Mark Chanlynn and his Rocky Mountain Rifle Works in Longmont, Co. I spent almost a year researching and talking to custom barrel makers and gunsmiths before I settled on Mark. He's a winning shooter using his own barrels. The major reson I settled on him was that he makes the barrel and installs it. Not every barrel maker does that. And I have a good excuse to make a trip to Colorado to pick it up.

They make most of the barrels in the world after this it would be Truvelo of South Africa or Vektor

Does Lothar Walther have a US contact? If so, anybody have it?

Thx,

I suprised to hear that Shilen are not nice people.I have several Shilen barrels on my rifles. My smith always gets them on time, and to the specs he requests. What more can you say about a barrel maker.Sorry you had a bad experience.

My vote for Walther too.

The Lothar Walther barrels I have seen and used are fine barrels but maybe not as fine as their brochure says! Just kidding. There is nothing wrong with a company bragging on it's own product.
I kind of prefer the cut rifled barrels just because I think they are a better example of the barrel makers craft. Having said that though I must say that I have installed hundreds of Shilens, dozens of Douglas, and dozens of Harts and all have been excellent barrels. My best BR rifle had a Hart barrel. My best Long range rifle a Smith. Just don't cheap out and get a bargain barrel and you will be fine. Regards, Bill.

Another vote for Lothar Walther.
There barrels are second to none.
I use them almost exclusively.
The accuracy they "brag" about IS all that, to say, they are everything they claim.
I have used dozens and never had a bad one, in fact, they have all been great.
give Woody Woodall an email at lotharwalther@mindspring.com
below is a 200 yd 3 shot group with factory ammo, from bipod and no rear rest. useing a Walther barrel.
Also below is a link to see many more targets from many rifles with the Walther barrels. I highly reccomend them!
