I have a 700 in 338Win that is ready for a new barrel. The 330 Dakota looks interesting. Other than a new barrel is there anything else that needs to be done? Are there potential problems with this conversion?

The 330 dakota uses a slightly larger dia rim, so your bolt and extractor may need to be slightly opened up to fit. Of course you could also form rem ultr mag brass in the 330 dakota fl die and trim to length.

There is also a chance you may have some feeding problems going with the non belted larger case.

I cannot answer the question by way of comparison to a Rem 700 but I did the same conversion using a L/H Winchester Model 70 from .338 to .330. In my case a new Shilen barrel was deployed but I do know others who have simply had a re-chamber job done.

As for bolt face modfication on the Winchester this was not required as the difference in rim diameter was already catered for in the manufacturing tolerances of the Winchester bolt face.

No other feed or magazine length alterations were necessary and the rifle has never failed to feed the slightly larger .404 based Dakota cases, The Remington may be different, before you start any alterations try and present a Dakota case head to your exisitng bolt face and try and seat a few rounds inthe magazine, if all looks good, you may then consider taking the next substantive steps
