Calibrating Depth Mics
I have a Starret dept mic that I bought off eBay a while back that has so far met all my needs. I would however like to get it calibrated so I would be assure that its reading exactly 1.000". How do I do this? I assume there's some type of standard I can purchase that would enable me to be sure of my instrument's measurements. What do I need?
Thanks,

RojelioI would think you would adjust it to 0.000 not 1.000. You could use a surface plate or any smoothe surface like glass.

Rusty MarlinAcctually you calibrate it at zero.
You need a granite or a known dead flat surface, A peice of plate glass will work in a pinch. If the spindle doesn't read Zero when set to the flat surface, loosen the lock nut for the barrel and adjust the barrel till the Zero mark lines up, then re-snug the lock nut.
JINX, I owe you a beer Rojelio. COme on up to claim it any time

vapodogObviously the first setting is at "0".....set it on something flat and make sure it reads "0" at 0.000
Frankly.....after that you're done....there is absolutely no adjustmant to change anything except one setting.....and "0" is as good as any place!!!
If you really want to know it's reading 1.000 at 1.000 then you should fing/get a 1" gage block.
Not an expensive block IMO.

ole_270The only other adjustment is for the other rods in the set. Each of them would need set to the appropriate "Jo Block". Set the mic to zero with the 0-1 rod, then the others would be adjusted by the nut on the end of those rods. I'm guessing you're just using the 0-1 rod, so set it at zero like the others stated.
