REBORE ?
I have a 30-06 that I think I would like to get a re-bore job on. Where does one send out for this, how much $$ is it, and are they sucessful? In have never done this before. Would like to make it a 35 whelen or a 338-06.. Thanks for your help. Maddog

There are folks that do it and someone will give you info on them. Unless there's a reason to save the old barrel it's usually not advised because one can have a new barrel installed for the same or less cost.

If it's a featherweight barrel it might get a bit thin as well.

Douglas won't make (I've asked them and they say no) their featherweight barrel in anything over .30 caliber FWIW. The barrel gets too thin for their likes.

As a matter of fact one can usually trade rifles for a new one cheaper than rebarreling or reboring.

Some are successful some not. Unless there is a reason you need to keep the old barrel contour you would be money ahead to just replace the barrel.

Will do it for around $270. Includes barrel, installation and blueing.

As usual just my $.02

Hi MADDOG,
In response to your actual question...we rebore rifles here at Delta Gun Shop/Clearwater Reboring and the cost for a project such as yours would run $295 if we do the chamber modifications here. We have a lot of customers that send only the barrel and have a local smith do the neck and throat mods. The cost on a rebore only is $185.
Don't know where you land in Califoria when you're down, but there is another rebore shop in Prescott Arizona, Danny Pederson does the work, and does an excellent job.
The success of the rebore is affected by the quality of the original barrel. If it was a shooter then the rebore generally is also. If the original set-up exhibited signs of stresses or grouping problems, a rebore will not generally get rid of the problem.
For a little more info you can go to Delta Gun Shop / Clearwater Reboring and go into the reboring pages.

Enjoy the project, what ever you decide to do.
Jim

ps. whereabouts in Alaska?? the Delta Gun Shop originated in Delta Junction south of Fairbanks.

Reboring is an excellent alternative to rebarreling. Often, a rebore job results in a barrel that is more accurate than it was previously, and can cost quite a bit less than having a new barrel installed, while giving you one of equal or better quality.

Here's two good outfits that do it, and there are several others!

It is a myth that installing a new barrel is better and less expensive than a rebore job. BUT, when you have reboring done, you often end up waiting a long time to get your gun back! At least that was my experience when dealing with the old-time A & M Rifle Co. of Prescott AZ. But the barrels were worth the wait!! I don't know the lead time on the two above!

I agree on the rebore. Dan Pederson did the rebore on my Rem 721..30-06 up to a 338-06. Excellent job but it did take a while but I was in no hurry. I will be in Phoenix in a coupla and a visit to Dan in Prescott is high on the list. Have another job I want him to do on a new barrel for my '03 Springfield.

John, Make sure you have his most recent address as Danny has moved twice in the last couple of years. He's back here in Prescott now in his own building instead of renting the place he had in Prescott Valley.
