The Erfurt Mauser
I picked up this little 8x57 some time ago on consgnment. It is built on the small ring Erfurt action. I load it to original spec's of a nominal 35-40 kpsi as provided by Hodgdon's. While browsing the net I found a nice custom built on a small ring Erfurt chambered in 270 Win. It was built by Griesbach Custom and is shown on Ralf Martini's website. I believe Mr. Griesbach once worked at M&H. So, apparently the Erfurt is suitable for such pressures?

That is a beautiful rifle. Looks very handy too.

I would leave it as-is and continue your current
reloading practices. That's a very nice rifle.

Just because a rifle is built doesn't mean it should have been. Many small ring, large thread 98's had a tendency to exhibit receiver ring stretch. I personally would not build one of the early Kar98's into a .270.

Try to look unimportant. Your enemy might be low on ammo.

Yes my plan is to continue as I am. It shoots the 185 gr Core-Lokt darn well and they are cheap to shoot. Just surprsed to see the 270 by a known builder on a well known builder's site given some of what I have read on the Erfurt. Appreciate the comments.

Agreed, in spades.

It's a honey, and there's not a thing wrong hunting with an 8X57 as original.

In fact, using that rifle as-is would be a very satisfying experience. It's heirloom material.

By God, wear a red plaid coat while you're at it Wink

Several years ago I saw a Gene Simillion rifle in 270 Win on a 1917 Erfurt.

FISH!!

Heed the words of Winston Smith in Orwell's 1984:

"Every record has been destroyed or falsified, every book rewritten, every picture has been repainted, every statue and street building has been renamed, every date has been altered. And the process is continuing day by day and minute by minute. History has stopped. Nothing exists except an endless present in which the Party is always right."

Erfurt made both small ring and large ring 98's.

A 1917 Erfurt SR action built into say a 7x57 not loaded to "modern" pressures would be fine if used as a hunting rifle. A .270 built built on that same action would give me pause. The later Polish made actions adressed the weaknesses found in those earlier Erfurt actions. Still, I do not consider them as hearty as say a Mexican SR 98.
