Sauer 202(Can a Smith make barrels for these)?

Looking at the Sauer Highland or Outback,only problem is I want it in either 338Fed or 358W.And of course Sauer don't stock-em.

Has anyone heard(CAN IT BE MADE UP=SMITH) of this being done?

As some are aware,these barrels are a little more complicated.As the bolt-lugs lock-up directly into the barrel.

I believe it will run more then most will want to pay. I saw barrels advertized here in the states somewhere. If I can find the site I`ll pass it on. They ran ~$1200 USD though as I remember, NOT CHEAP!!

possibly, if you had one in .308, you might find someone to rebore it to .338 Fed......ask first however!

500grains

You could get one in .308 and load it with 240 grain Woodleigh bullets. That would be close to a .358.

10-12 years ago there was a gunsmith in Texas (who is still in business but whose name escapes me) who advertized the ability to make barrels for the Sauer 200. (Which would mean he could also do it for the 202). He usually has a table at the Reno SCI show (Don't know about this year. I did not go.) If memory serves, he is a former Marine Corp armorer who took over the the McMillan barrel making operation years and years ago (no relation to McMillan stocks). I just can't think of the guys name. As I recall, the way he made the new Sauer 200 barrels was to take an existing barrel, save the existing breech portion where the bolt locks up, cut off the rest of the barrel and then weld on a new barrel forward of the breach area in the customer's caliber of choice.

Wish I could remember the guys name!!

Can this be done without losing powder space?Also wonder if a 240gn would stabilize,mmmmmmmmm.

Thought the max weight one could go would of been around 180gn's in a 308W case?
Has anyone here loaded up 200 &/or 220gn Woodleigh's in the 308W(Without losing powder space)?How did they shoot?

Pretty sure not many Smiths want to do that sought of job down my way though

Plus the issue of fluting could cause stress.

You never know Sauer might introduce either the 338Fed or 358W(Maybe both,American/Australian market) at a later stage?But if they don't I want to be able to get one knocked-up to suite.

Blaser are introducing the 325WSM,so I'm sorta hoping Sauer will have some common sense.And introduce more American-made cal's,just gotto luv options.

Tez,
Keith Bridgeman at Sprinter Arms can do rebores ... but he discourages it as it's expensive (approx $400) and not worth his time. BUT ... he will do it if a firearm is "historically marked" or is something that really cant be done any other way. I believe he did the 0.435" rebores for the 435PH wildcat developed in Perth. Years ago I had a 10/75x68 with rebored 8mm barrel and it was rough ... but shootable. Whether rough due to the original barrel or process undertaken ... I dont know.
I find he's very willing to do "odd-ball" stuff, regrind existing reamers etc... at reasonable prices. Might be worth a chat ... although I find it easier to mail him with exactly what you want and then follow up with a call about 2 weeks later.
