Remington Model 700 Alpha=I
Has anyone seen one of these rifles yet ?. What I've read about them they look pretty good. I called Remington but they didn't answer. I could not find the price of one either.

Have not seen one, but have read about them. Looks like a 700 that has some minor cosmetic features. Bolt shroud, handle, body, bottom....
What is your gunsmithing question?

What is the gunsmithing question? Do you want to use one for a custom build?

It's ugly, and why do I want a straight trigger?

They resurrected the Nesika Bay action. If made as well as the original, it will be good stuff.

For that price I can buy a 700 action, build my own, and still save some money. I know not everyone cannot do that but thats a little high in my opinion but I will be honest, I have not looked at retail prices on rifles for awhile.

What is the Gunsmith question though?

Well I stopped at a local gun shop & found out the retail price is $2338.00. That is too much for a 700 Remington. I don't care how much they dress it up. Yesterday I went to a gun show here in Az. & ran across a Remington 700 stainless in 223 Rem. with a 2.5x20 50mm Leupold on it. It has the heavy barrel & is fluted. It's just the gun I was looking for. The guy let me go out to my car & get my bore scope & take a look. I don't think it has 20 rds. through it. I got it for $1300.

At what point in time do you plan on asking the gunsmithing question?

Well....still not a gunsmith question! But I was discussing this action with two fair-to-middlin' gunsmiths at dinner tonight (Ray Montgomery and Dan Dowling). Davidson's has actions only for sale (~$575) and Dan Dowling has two of them being shipped next week. Ron Spomer has a video discussing the differences in this "new" version (link following).

What seems interesting on the action is a whole different bolt release, different bolt takedown, larger ejection port, and (hopefully!) closer tolerances. BUT, they lengthened the magazine boxes for both the short action and the long action for longer bullets and thus previous Model 700 stocks will have to be modified to fit.

Here is the gunsmith question.

What would a gunsmith charge to do all the up grades to a standard 700 action/rifle.

Tell that guy to iron his shirt.
He said they changed the steel in the barrels and action so they would be compatible; I want to know what steel they now use. Probably marketing hype.
I did note that they no longer use the old clip extractor, but have notched the bolt head forward of the right/bottom locking lug and inserted an extractor there.
Timney trigger, he said.
Bolt stop release on the side.
Removable bolt knob.
Fluted bolt.
Indexed lug bolt shroud; no more screwed on bolt shroud.
Lengthed mag.
Price to do all this to a standard 700: $1432.

Dpcd is pretty close to what I would charge.
