Matt NormanOlympic Arms UltraMag action
What's the story on these actions? They are retailing, according to the Olympic Arms website, for under $600. That pretty much rules out "old world craftsmanship", but is there any hope for them at all as a basis for a large caliber rifle? On paper the features sound good and they claim it will handle up to a .505 Gibbs. Or is it better suited to be a canoe anchor? -MN

<Bill Tompkins>Matt,
I think that the fast way to get some information is to go to "search" and type in "Olympic Arms UltraMag actions" and search under "Big Bore". The date was 6/13/01. This is a thread that covered most of the information.
We've done several at the shop and so far they have done quite good. The only problem that I see is the exterior, since they are cast the outside requires some real work.

Matt NormanThanks Bill, found the previous thread. For the price I can live with the surface blem problems. It's the function and construction that has to be there. -MN

ready_on_the_rightJust a thought but the CZ actions in Brownells are cheaper than $600 and appear to be the same as these with better finish and probably better steel. Why go with the Oly Arms??

Matt NormanDon't know, that's why I'm asking. Which is the better dollar value, which has the better features? -MN

<Bill Tompkins>Matt,
Try
www.cz-usa.comthere is quite a bit of information on this site. I e-mailed Olympic Arms and got a very prompt response for that thread I mentioned. Ready is correct in that the finish on the CZ's is better. We have barreled both with some pretty big cartridges and haven't seen any problems. This might just come down to availability and finish.
Let me know if I can help.
Bill
