Recommendations for semi-inlet M70 (pre64) rifle stock
Gents;

I am thinking of replacing my M70's oringinal stock-reason, too short, too low for even low Leupy QR rings on Weaver GS bases.

I have looked at Wening, Great American, Richards, Show me and a few otehrs that make decent products.

I have heard bad things about Richards, GA and nothing about the others mentioned.

I am looking to do the fitting and finishing myself, maybe having someone cut a bit of checkering on it.

Want to have it ready for an Antelope hunt this October...

Not looking for a fancy log, nor a polymer one either. Just decent Walnut stick that is rather classic in style, will allow use of low mounted scope (and irons) that won't steal all my play money... (which is not too much).

Thanks.

I'm not sure if you're asking for recommendations on where to go or what. Assuming that you are, here you go.

I've had good luck in the past dealing with Wenig. Nice folks, good wood at a good price. I'm lucky to be about 1.5 hour drive from them, so it's not a big deal to drive down & pick it out. But I've also just called and had it shipped.

I've found their standard grade English walnut to be good looking stuff. Stepping up a grade or two is easy to do when holding it in my hand, harder to do when trusting someone to do it for me at long distance.

Mark;

I'm down near Fort Wood, so about the same distance to Lincoln.

I like a few of the stock designs they have, so will likley make a trip up to see/select/pay...

Wonder if they will cut one a bit fatter than usual so I can fit to my left handed needs in terms of cast and toe... Guess I 'll call and ask.
