I have a m96 rifle and with the saftey in the
middle position I unchambered a round.
When I did this the projectile separated from the case and stuck in the barrel.
I had to push it out with a cleaning rod.
Of course powder went everywhere.
What is happening here? The rifle functions normally and cycles rounds no problems with the saftey off.
Why did the projectile separate from the case
and stick in the barrel with the saftey in the middle position.
The projectile was a 140gn SPBT seated with the bottom of the BT level with the base of the neck.
I was under the impression with a 3 position saftey that this was possible?
Any comments?

This sounds strange to me.
If you still have the orginal barrel on your old Swede the throat is supposed to be so long that its hardly impossible to get into the lands with any bullet. A possible thing is that you got some thing into the chamber that jammed the bullet and making it separate from the case on extracting.
I dont thing the safety have anything to do with this.
Back in 95 the bencrest world championship was held in Brisbane. To my big surprise the first thing my eyes catched in the range shop was a few boxes of Swedish 6,5X55 army ammo
I have never seen a pacage for sale here in a gunshop.
There was also several boxes of 6,5X55 Norma "jaktmatch" for sale there. The Aussies called the Norma ammo "jacket match" A translation would be something close to "hunting match"
Its a target round suited to match the speed of the running moose target we do the practise/competition at here in Sweden.
Hope you work out the trouble with your M-96 rifle!
Stefan
You need to seat the bullets a little deeper in the case as they are hanging up in the lands....
the safty has a single function and that is to disingage the trigger in simple terms.

The 416 Taylor WebPage!
They have an aperture rear sight for the 96. I put one on mine, and like it.
The first thing I thought of was that the bullet was seated too long. I checked that and the bullet was well off the lands.
I chambered a round with the saftey off and then ejected it and it functioned fine no marks on the bullet and no difficulty closing the bolt.
Then to see if it would do it again I chambered a round that had fed in and out ok before, with the saftey off.
Then I moved the saftey into the middle position and unchambered the round and the bullet stuck in the barrel and the case separated as before.
I have not had this rifle long and have fired about 35 rounds so far no problems.
So I was seeing if you could unload the rifle with the saftey in the middle position.
I was under the impression that this was possible?
I can't figure why the bullet separates from the case and sticks in the barrel?
Any one with a swede that has unloaded with the saftey in the middle position?

Maybe 1-2000 times, yeah... The only thing that moves when you turn the safety from full to the middle position is the flag itself (and the cocking piece/firing pin as they move over the small notch, but they return to the same position), there is a machined flat on the on the cylindrical part of the safety that allows the bolt to rotate when set in the middle position - that is the only thing that separates it from full safety.
If this is repeatedly happening, I'll do my best to dream up a scenario below:
1. With the safety applied (any position), the bolt can move up to 1 mm further forward than w/o the safety.
2. You mentioned rebarreling - I'd suppose it might have been taken a turn or five with a chamber reamer there too. This can of course leave machining marks and/or chips.
3. Your bullets are seated very loosely - a severe no-no in this gun BTW.
4. Upon applying the safety, the bolt moves forward a bit and the bullet catches on a ridge/chip/machining mark somewhere in the throat that it is unable to reach otherwise.
5. This r/c/mm holds the bullet firmly enough to pull it out of the neck when the cartidge is ejected.

I was experimenting today and the rifle chambers and unchambers loaded rounds without
any problems with the saftey off.
Checking the bore and chamber reavealed no visible reasons.
I din't try the middle position again.
I think you may be right that the bolt with the saftey in the middle position moves forward when the bolt is opened and the bullet catches in the throat.
The bullets are seated with a lee seating die.

I finally found a burr on the inside of the action where the front hole was drilled and tapped for the bridge mount. It was where the lugs on the bolt travel in the front of the receiver.I could just feel it with the tip of my little finger.
On removing this burr I had no more problems and the bolt functin is smooth as silk with or without the saftey engaged as it should be.
I can now unload with the saftey in the middle position whithout pulling rounds apart.
Thanks to all who offered comments.
