frank4570Do I need the bigger recoil lug?
I am putting together parts for my savage 458 win mag. Do I need to install an after market oversize recoil lug? Do I wait and see how it goes? It is just a waste of time and money?

fireball168If you measure the thickness variation on the factory lug, it'll make your head spin....almost as much as measuring the difference in lug depths from the front receiver ring.
One can be fixed with a new lug - the other by facing the front ring. Neither should cost you too much.

N E 450 No2On a 458 Win Mag bolt rifle I would think about a barrel recoil lug as well.

You bet. I've seen Savages in 30/06 with the factory lug bent. The aftermarket lugs are thicker, made of better material, and large enough that a barrel lug is totally unnecessary. As noted previously, they are also consistent in thickness. The factory lug is anything but. Regards, Bill.
