MarkRemington 700 firing pin protrusion
Hi All,
I started noticing some light primer strikes on my Rem 700 SA (20 tactical) and it turns out I'm only getting .0405 firing pin protrusion, measured with the bolt removed but not properly disassembled. I'll have to wait a couple days before I have some time for that but if it turns out there is nothing else binding or causing an issue, can I simply chuck the pin up and machine off the face of the collar? If yes, would you learned folks recommend removing .015 for a final measurement of .055 protrusion, or would you suggest something more or less?
Thanks all!
Mark

J.D.SteeleI suggest that I've been using protrusions from 0.035" to 0.040" on almost all my single shot builds since the early '70s with perfect satisfaction. This is a subject with a lot of misinformation, but IMO your problem lies in some other area such as binding or weak spring or bolt handle not completely down or marginal headpace or similar. JMOFWIW.

clowdisFellow came into the shop a while back with the same problem. I could find no problem with binding, light spring or anything else so I removed enough off the shoulder to give the firing pin .060 protrusion and I guess it worked fine because he hasn't been back. .045 might work fine for Joe, but I think it's borderline.
