Hello All,- Is it worth having a new factory barrel lapped?

are you talking hand lapping, or fire lapping?? Any lapping will help a factory tube. I have a NECO lapping kit and love it on the factory barrels i have, and heartily endorse fire lapping using the NECO process. my .02 worth.

Any of the barrel makers that I have talked to say that a barrel that is already the correct size cannot be lapped without increasing the diameter to the point that they are to large to shoot correctly. My latest inquiry was to Hart barrels not long ago, I was curious to see if it might be advisable to have a barrel lapped that they had recontured from heavy varmint to a hunter taper.

Before attempting to fix something why not shoot it for awhile and see if its “broken†first?

b beyer, Hart is going to change my sporter barrel to a varmint take off barrel I bougth for my M700. They are going to do their accurizing package to it.

Hart laps their barrels after rifling so why would you want to do it again?

I am wondering if Hart needs to lap it or not, as part of their accurizing package.

Personally, I don't think lapping an existing barrel makes much sense.

- When done at a barrel maker, it's done buy a person who has lots of experience at knowing when it's done; we don't have that experience.

- When done at a barel maker, they start a bit undersize; we don't.

- When done at a barrel maker (at least at Lilja) they start overlong and cut off the parts at both ends that tend to end up a greater diameter.

Hart in New York are barrel manufacturers, and Hart in Pennsylvania while related are gunsmith, retailshop keepers. Both with stellar reputations. IMHO take off barrels are a world away from a good Hart tube.

Don’t you think they would be far more qualified to make that decision than you are?
