Springfield 1911 38 Super
I have a Springfield 1911 in 38 super that will shoot the first round low by 4-6" and then the rest of the rounds in the magazine will be in a normal group. It does have a factory comped barrel and a holo sight. Is there a simple fix to this problem? Any suggestions on what to try?

I would assume that something is not seating properly for the first round .

Tell me how you load the first round. Do you use the slide release, or do you grasp the slide and let it go? Or do you grasp the slide and ride it forward? Which is a bad thing.

Will it shoot low on the first round if you load a partial magazine? Try leaving a round or two out of the magazine and shooting the first round the same way you have been. Does it still happen?

Try a different link or link pin.

Try to look unimportant. Your enemy might be low on ammo.

I release the slide with the slide release. I have tried a couple of different magazines and not always with 10 rds. That doesn't seem to make a difference. I have tried factory ammo as well as handloads. I have not changed the link though.

Try this. Load it up and shoot 1 shot. Set it down, relax, wiggle your fingers. Pick it up again and fire another shot. Repeat. Do all the shots go low?

I'll try that with waiting but that's sort of what I did with the last magazine I shot last weekend.
I stopped by a little gun shop on the way home this evening and they had a #13 link to try. I plan to shoot it with different magazines and number of rounds before trying the different link.

You might check the edges of the lugs on top of the barrel, and underside of slide (where barrel locks up to slide) and see if they're sharp or any burrs. It never hurts to debur or smooth those edges a bit, but don't go hog wild.

Turned out to be an easy fix...new batteries in the holo. I tried 2-3 rounds in three different magazines and the first 3 rounds out of 10rds in the magazine. Fresh batteries was all it needed.

Three rounds two handed at 15yds.

I did check for burrs, etc while I had it apart and everything looked good. I don't think I ever changed the batteries since I got it years ago.
