Friends-

I purchased a stock from U.S. Gunstocks on a very well known auction site. The stock is for a L.C. Smith Field Grade. Has anyone had any prior dealings with U.S. Gunstocks and I am considering letting them go ahead and inlet the stock for me.

Any information, positive and/or negative would be helpful.

Have no clue. A vast majority of the wood patterns etc were sold to Walnut Grove. I think Henry actually moved up to Idaho.

Looking at a map the location of Us Gunstocks and the old Great American are about 1.7 miles apart.

Their pic on their site didn't turn me on.

If this is really Great American, resurrected, then run, don't walk, as far away as possible. Note that I have had no dealings with US Gunstocks, but I had several (mostly bad) ones with the old GA.

I don't believe US had anything to do with GAG. Patterns, tooling, and leftover inventory from GAG was sold to Walnut Grove. Henry did, in fact, move to Idaho.

The charge to duplicate a customer stock made my eyes water. As I said business is good. Last time I talked to them they were doing a large order for someone and were having trouble keeping up on the blank department.

I talked to the owner of Walnut Grove this year after Henry Pohl had stopped by the shop. I have known Henry since 1994. We met at Reno during the ACGG Exhibition. We have kept in touch. We both love history

The new owner was having trouble making time for his family due to the demand for his services. He looks as if he has chosen a path to keep his family obligations primary in his life without losing money. He obviously has some skill; as a good carver is in great demand and may ask what he wills for his labor.

Since the closure of Fajen in 1998, I have noticed climbing rates for inletting services. There were several who kept the prices lower...many have passed on or have physical problems that make them no longer available. Unfortunately, there are still average carvers who make life "interesting" for stockmakers who try to make a living from gunstocks.

I will also say, the greatest challenge I ever faced as a stockmaker was from a semi-inletted Great American Gunstock Company gunstock. Provided by the client and in Exhibition Claro. He was in love with the wood and would not allow another selection to replace the one he had chosen I fixed what was needed to be done and made the client happy.
