How do you.....
get rid of the "ears" and "duckpond" on a 1917?

farbedoThe ears are removed with a (take your pick) grinder, hacksaw, bandsaw, metal shaper, or milling machine. If you mill them off, you are probably going to need to use carbide. These are hard receivers. Then the contour is set with a surface grinder. I grind them to match a Remington 700 and use those scope mounts. Many contours are possible from SR Mauser to Winchester.
The duck pond is done by soldering a close fitting steel insert, or by welding the insert in. My preference is to weld with a MIG welder. I get fewer pits and inclusions to fix with a MIG setup than when I do this with TIG.
Others will have their own methods.
