Model 64 Winchester disassembly
I recently purchased a Model 64 Winchester and am in the process of disassembling it.

I've never owned a Model 94 type rifle before so I downloaded a good set of instructions.

These instructions are for the later rifles that use a coil mainspring and tell you to put the rifle on half cock.

Mine has a flat mainspring and it seems that preloading the hammer pin prior to removal is not the way to go.

This is a really nice rifle and I don't want to mangle the internals.

Every other aspect of the disassembly makes sense to me,but if there are any other pitfalls ,please advise.

Some educated advice would really be appreciated.

Thanks

Just curious...

Why do you want to take it apart???

I think the 64 is pretty much the same as the 94 other than barrel, lever, stock, etc. and unless you have some driving reason to take it apart, it's a bit of a process. Took a 94 apart some years ago and great learning experience. For those who do it on a regular basis, no problem, but won't take mine apart again.

Place the hammer in the fired position. Remove the screw attaching the mainspring to the tang. If there is strain screw in front of the mainspring screw, loosen it first.

That's all there is to it. Nothing goes flying off with flat springs, unlike their coil brethren.

Thanks a million guys.

The reason I am takeing it apart is that the lever sometimes comes down beside the disconnector button (?) on the lower tang (the little button that makes sure you have completely closed the bolt to privent out of battery discharge).

I don't know if this is due to wear, a slightly bent lever or what.
Any advice?

thanks again for the disassembly tips.
