M70 Classic: Scope Base Spacing
Anyone know what the screw spacing is for bases for a M70 Winchester Classic (the stainless and fiberglass variation) in.375 H&H? Thanks, need to order some bases and do not have the rifle to measure myself.
The front bases are all the same. It's the rear base that counts. For long and short actions, the rear mount screw spacing is .860. For the Express actions, really just a long action with the rear bridge cut back to open up the loading port, the spacing is .330. All of the factory rifles originally chambered Classics in 375H&H length cartridges (also 7STW, 300RUM, 300Wby. 416 Rem Mag, etc) were built on express actions.
Thanks David, that is exactly the info I was looking for. There is also a reference to some of the bases having 8x40 screws, do you know how that varies from action to action?

Michael RobinsonMike, the Win. M70 rifles all come drilled and tapped for 6x48s.
Some shooters like to do aftermarket work and have the base holes re-drilled and re-tapped to larger, 8x40s.
So Talley (and maybe some others, I don't know) make bases with 8x40 screws as well as standard bases with 6x48s.
MR,
Thanks for the info. I am all set now. This is one reason AR is so great! Thanks again.

airgun1I will throw a little into the mix. Later pre 64 and a lot of post 64 M70's in 375 H&H have .425" rear hole spacing.
This is good information. To add to the question, I have a 300 rum being converted to a 404 Jeffery. I have a Zeiss Conquest 2.5-8x32 going on it & would like to keep the loading port clear if possible. Can I use the regular bases or do I need the extended?
With a #5 Kreiger barrel, Do you think low or medium QD rings?
Thanks
