Mauser G33/40
Hi everyone, I have been contemplating some custom work on a Mauser G33/40 action and have been advised that these actions are not suitable for high pressure cartridges is this accurate.

I doubt it, although the reasoning could be because it is a small ring action. Many have been used to make light "mountain" rifles barreled in high pressure flat shooting rounds like the 270 or 25-06. My favorite whitetail rifle is a G33-40 using hot 6mmRem loads.

I'd be more than glad to pay you a fair price for that G33/40 action or trade you a 1999 Montana action or a std Mauser 98, or an FN, whatever would suit you better...

Thanks for the offer and the interest but as I mentioned it is my favorite deer rifle. I'll keep a lookout for a G33-40, if I see one I'll contact you. I still see them occasionally but they seem to have become very collectible. Maybe BigBull will sell his?

I have two G.33/40s and a good friend has one. Mine have been left in 8mm mauser (great deer cartridge when handloaded) and the friend had his rebarreled to .257 Roberts. He has had no trouble with that round. Really, the 8mm is a great cartridge when handloaded so if you find one with a military barrel make sure and shoot it a bit to see if it is accurate before changing it out.

The G3340 is not suitable for magnum cartriges because it is a small ring action but is fine for standard cartriges.

When I was in school at Trinidad there was a display with a number of G33/40's that Ackley had used for destructive tests. I have never seen any reports that came from it though. I wonder if anyboby else has read any other Ackley blow up tests besides the ones he wrote about in his Vol 1&2 books????????

I am currently having a custom 7X57 built on a G33/40 action. When I orginally bought the rifle, it had already been converted to a .25-06 and my smith orginally tried to get me to go with a .280 Rem. The action is strong enough to handle those pressures.

Brno chambered the small ring 98's in 7x64, 8x60 and supposedly 9x57. I have heard of conversions to 9.3x62, and am contemplating one myself.

Husqvarna chambered their small ring 98's in .30-06.
