Shims to raise sight bases - what to use
I have nice old Recknagel fixed mounts on my classic rifle. I have been given a new Swrovski scope, but it jus touches the barrel. I have borrowed a set of warne mounts, but they look horrible.

Ideally I would just like to raise my existing bases byt 1/2 to 1mm. Would putting some shims under the bases work and what would I use - a pice of brass plate or should I really use a steel shim. Obviously it will need to be flexible so mold with the top of the action.

Advice greatfully appreciated.

i have seen everything from waxed cardboard to beer cans used. the easiest way if you know the thickness is to go to an auto parts store or machinist supply store and buy a feeler gauge or shim stock.

aluminum cans make great shims. Due to your location you should have an abundance of these.

Try to look unimportant. Your enemy might be low on ammo.

You could also cut small cardboard shims to make washers around the base screw holes. Then butter the bottoms of the bases with a steel filled epoxy. Secure the bases to the receiver with release agent applied. When the epoxy just sets and is still a little soft, use the edge of a sharpened credit card to trim the excess. Let it cure and you have custom molded base shims. Color to match the bases.
