Coating reapplication or removal
Have a Ruger No. 1 that had a teflon coat put on it years ago and now I wish to rebarrel the rifle. The question is can the old coat be reapplied over to match a new coating or can it be removed to the bare steel and a new type of finish be used. Thanks for any suggestions.

I don't think it is possible to recoat over the old finish and even if it was you would most likely not like the results. It would be like blueing a rifle without removing the old blue first.

As for refinishing, sure it can be taken down to "in the white" and refinished.

The proper way to do it would be to coat the whole rifle again. Applying new coating over old will just guarantee that the new coating will perform poorly.

Proper surface prep will remove all of the old coating leaving a good surface for the new coating.
